Pay yourself first

It’s Best To Pay Yourself First

If you are working and cannot afford to save, it may be time to take a step back and pay yourself first. From any pay check, no matter the value, it is incumbent upon you to ensure that a first portion of your pay check goes into your personal account. If you cannot trust yourself to perform this task consistently, automate. The simple fact is, if you are not paying yourself,  you are working to pay others. You are essentially building another person’s empire while neglecting your own.

Why Pay Yourself First

You should pay yourself first because if you do not, you run the risk of not paying yourself at all. Have you ever received a paycheck and after paying all your bills, you have a zero or a negative balance? Have you had money in your account after paying your bills, and that money quickly disappears due to frivolous spending?

These situations occur when you do not pay yourself first. If you do not pay yourself first, it is likely that you will end up not budgeting and over spending, or you will simply spend what you have because you have not assign a task to that money.

By paying yourself first, it forces you to budget. For example, if your monthly salary is  $5000, and you automatically pay yourself by saving $1000, you really have $4000 to spend for that month. That $1000 makes a huge difference. You will no doubt adjust to having $4000 and will stop thinking about making $5000 per month. By having this mindset shift, you will live on $4000 and not $5000. By paying yourself first, you will force yourself to live below your means and budget accordingly.

Pay yourself first
If you are not paying yourself first,  you are working to pay others. Stop building another person’s empire while neglecting your own.

Force Budgeting

For many of us, budgeting can be difficult. It is difficult not because it is a mentally difficult task. It is typically difficult because if forces us to track our spending over a long period of time. Budgeting forces us to itemize what we are doing and forces us to be conscious of every purchasing decision.

By paying yourself first, we are pushed to budget without actually making a budget. In the example above, if you are paying yourself $1000 per month on a $5000 monthly salary, you must now live on $4000 per month. You are in a force budget situation. You are forced to curb your lifestyle from one that spends $5000 per month to one that spends $4000 per month. This is not an easy feat for many, but it can be done. By cutting out a few items, you will be surprise by how much you can save.

If you do not budget and live beyond your means, paying yourself first becomes a moot point. The interest on your debts will easily out pace your savings. To get ahead on your financial journey, it is important to live below your means. Paying yourself first helps facilitate this mindset change.

Pay Yourself First And Build Your Empire

Let us not forget, if you pay yourself first, you are building your financial legacy and not someone else’s. Think about shopping at Walmart, buying a car, or any other consumer goods, by making that purchase your are making someone else’s family rich. If it is not the Waltons, it’s the Porsche’s or the Cargill’s, by spending you may be enriching the Dell’s or the Knight’s. You may get a fleeting enjoyment from your purchase, but someone else’s family just got your money. Your temporary satisfaction is building another family’s permanent wealth.

However, if you pay yourself first, your are building your own empire and not someone else’s. Pay yourself first and you are growing wealth. Money that you typically spend on consumer goods go to your investment/savings account. You are growing, you are opening up opportunities and will be afforded all the advantages that comes with being financially secure. Pay yourself first and lay the foundation for a financially secure future.

Conclusion

If you are working and cannot afford to save, it may be time to take a step back and pay yourself first. From any pay check, no matter the value, it is incumbent upon you to ensure that a first portion of your pay check goes into your personal account. If you cannot trust yourself to perform this task consistently, automate. The simple fact is, if you are not paying yourself,  you are working to pay others. You are essentially building another person’s empire while neglecting your own.

Growth mindset

Adapt A Growth Mindset Today

Every once in a while, you will come across something that is so impactful that it will stop you in your tracks. Recently, it was a quote from Nelson Mandela “I never lose, I either win or learn.” The quote is simple yet profound. In reality, it represents a different way of approaching life. This quote is the foundation of a growth mindset.

Growth mindset and fixed mindset
Growth Mindset

Growth Mindset

The growth mindset is not necessarily natural. We all have fears and are prone to acting for short term gratification. We are also prone to feeling sorry for ourselves and blaming others. The growth mindset on the other hand relates to believing that your success depends on time and effort. Believing that you control your destiny. Believing that you can improve with effort and persistence. This mindset thus leads to embracing challenges, persisting through obstacles, learning from criticism and seeking inspiration in others’ success. Those having this mindset therefore believes that with time and practice, they can achieve.

Change Your Mindset

We typically have a mix of a growth mindset and a fixed mindset (believing that certain qualities are inborn, fixed, and unchangeable). But it is up to us to take control of our lives and realize that we are in control of our actions and the resulting consequences.

It is up to us to learn from new things/experiences and to view errors as learning opportunities and only a stop on the path to achieving our full potential.

Nelson Mandela

We all know Nelson Mandela’s story. It is amazing and down right inspiring on it’s own. However, the words spoken by Nelson Mandela are truly profound. Nelson Mandela, an amazing optimist, a truly amazing man.

To view life in the context of “I never lose, I either win or learn” is the basis for continual growth.  This is the growth mindset. Viewing failure as an opportunity to learn internally pushes you to seek new experiences and challenges you to better yourself. When you believe that you can get better by challenging yourself and learning, it is easy to understand the correlation between hard work and success. Therefore, you will put in extra time and effort to gain higher achievement.

Growth Mindset In Life

Having a growth mindset in your life, generally, is a good thing. It is never a bad idea to seek knowledge and continue to learn and grow over time.  As this is a financial independence related blog, the following must be addressed. It is important to note that having a growth mindset, more specifically, in your financial life is a great attribute.

The path to a financially secure life takes patience and the requisite need to learn from your experiences as well as others. Like anything else in life, the more you learn, the better you become. The more you learn about your financial situation, an emergency fund, saving, investing and other financial tools, the better you will become at creating a more financially secure life.

Conclusion

Every once in a while, you will come across something that is so impactful that it will stop you in your tracks. Recently, it was a quote from Nelson Mandela “I never lose, I either win or learn.” The quote is simple yet profound. In reality, it represents a different way of approaching life. This quote is the foundation of a growth mindset. Adapt a growth mindset and journey to financial independence.

Investing to riches

How To Become Rich

So you want to know how to become rich. Well, who doesn’t. If you perform a quick search, you will find that there are countless discussions and advice for getting rich. While there are ways such as inheriting money or winning something akin to a lottery, becoming rich takes repetitive actions over time. To become rich, you must incrementally increase your riches through actions over time. That’s right, sorry to disappoint, but it will likely not occur over night. Becoming rich is likely a long term endeavor.

Do You Really Want To Be Rich?

How to become rich
Being rich vs being wealthy – Know the difference

Before we jump into how to become rich, do you actually want to become rich? One of the biggest error people make is not noticing the subtle difference between being rich and being wealthy.

According to Merriam Webster’s online dictionary, rich is “having abundant possessions and especially material wealth.” Notice that that definition says nothing about time and value. As such, you can be rich today and broke tomorrow. However, wealth according to Merriam Webster’s online dictionary is “abundance of valuable material possessions or resources.” Do you see the difference. An abundance of valuable material possession or resources. Therefore, wealth is unlikely to be lost as fast as riches. So, are you seeking wealth or riches?

So You Want To Be Rich

If riches is what you want, as mentioned above, it takes action over time. For example, it is a matter of getting from 50 cents to a dollar and amplifying this effect over time. The more the increase from baseline (in the example, 50 cents) and the more time allowed for compounding, the richer you will become. Typically, to achieve this effect, it requires earning more.

Earning More By Investing

How to become rich: invest
How to become rich – invest

How do you earn more? To earn more, you need to invest. On a basic level, whether you are an entrepreneur or a salaried employee, to increase your take home pay you must invest in yourself.

To earn more, you can invest your time in finding a higher paying job or take the path of investing in your education. In both cases, you are investing your time and potentially money to increase your chances of obtaining a higher paying job.

You also have the option of investing in being better at your current place of employment. While there are no guarantees that this will lead to a promotion, performing well in your current role does increase your chances for a promotion and an increased salary.

There are also external opportunities to invest and grow your riches. Whether this is in the stock market or in real estate, it becomes a matter of allowing your money to work for you while you are doing something else. This provides an additive benefit to whatever it is that you are earning from current/future employment.

The Take Home Message

The simple answer to how to become rich is to take small steps everyday to increase your riches and over time you will achieve your goal. That is it.

Of course, the underlying actions that you take are situational and are up to you. The simple math is riches = assets – debts. As such, if you are able to earn more while lowering costs over time, you will have an abundance. However, we must impress upon you that on this journey, rarely are there short cuts.

Conclusion

While there are many discussions and advice on the topic of how to become rich, do not lose sight of the fact that achieving this goal likely takes repetitive actions over time. To have an abundance, incrementally increase your riches through small actions over time.

Always keep in mind that accumulating riches will likely not occur over night. Becoming rich is likely a long term endeavor. Do not get discourage. Stay the course.

To conclude, becoming rich is a stop on your journey to financial independence, but having wealth may be your ultimate goal.

Self made lies

Self Made? I Doubt It

You have heard it all before, pull yourself up by the bootstraps. Typically, the individual telling you to pull yourself up by the bootstraps will refer to themselves as self made. No matter how much you are able to “pull yourself up” the fact is, no one is self made. We all need help from others, but that alone is not enough to succeed. Even with help from others, you must be at the right place at the right time. In other words, to succeed, you must also be lucky. I am not discounting that hard work is necessary to achieve your goals, it is. But do not ever make the mistake of thinking that you are self made. In making that mistake, you are not appreciating or acknowledging the contributions of the people that have helped you along the way. Give them the credit and acknowledgement that they deserve.

Self Made

There are no self made individuals. For that matter, there are no self made millionaires. If you do not believe me, just think about it. Think of any so called self made individuals or millionaires. Yes, those individuals that are labeled self made. Pull back the curtain and look at the individual. Likely, they are very smart, hard working, and have a certain skill set combination that got them to where they are. Their dedication and skill set helped them navigate up, down, over, and around obstacles to become what we know them as today. They are good at what they do. But they did not do it alone. They are in effect, not self made.

You are not self made
You are not self made

The Team

Zoom out from our supposed self made individual and look at their team. Look at the people behind them who have implemented their plans and have mentored them to success. I am not talking about the new person that they have hired to fill a role. Nor am I identifying an easily replaceable employee that can be plugged into a specific role. I mean their team. The group of people who have been around them for years, or even decades. The group of people that have significantly impacted our so called self made millionaire’s life the most. The team could be made up of family members, a mentor or someone who has been a confidant over the years. The team is what give this individual strength. This team is the primary motivator and at times the inspiration from which our so call self made individual draws from.

The Big Break

Now pull back further to the individuals who gave our so called self made person his or her big break. This need not be one significant big break, it could be incremental breaks or transition from one point to the next. Who was that first client for a new business? Who was the first investor to believe in the idea or the employee that left their secure job to start a new company with our so call self made man? Find that person and you will find the catalyst for our self made man’s success.

Early Backers

If you still believe that some folks are self made, look at their childhood. Was it the parents or family members who gave our so call self made man a stable environment? What about their coach who saw the promise of a future star and spent the extra time to help hone his/her skills? Think about the teacher who saw the promise and provided the necessary encouragement. Who paid for the extra classes and tutoring lessons? These are the early backers. The early backers are people who saw promise and invested in our so called self made man’s future. Without the early backers, our self made man would be a shell of who he is today

Luck

Now, let us look at luck. It is difficult for us to admit that we have accomplished goals not by our pure skills and intelligence, but by luck. It is very simple, to be successful, you must have a bit of luck. Success is the intersection of luck, opportunity and skill. The Luck that you won the lottery with parents who may be able to nurture your developing mind. Luck that you had that coach or teacher that believed in you. Luck that you met that friend who profoundly impacted you and pushed you forward. In the simplest case, luck that you did not get hit by a car, affected by a disease or a situation beyond your control that left you ill-equipped to grab your future by the horns and move forward. Luck, you need it, so acknowledge it.

Conclusion

Do not be ashamed to acknowledge that your success is not attributed to you alone. Embrace those around you and achieve.

Money Beyond

Saving The Next $50,000, You Can Do It Now

On the journey to financial independence, each milestone is fuel for the next. One of the greatest initial milestone is that of accumulating funds over time. Once you have accumulated your first $50,000, it is time to think about saving the next $50,000 and beyond.  The biggest step on your journey to financial independence is the step you take today. Take the next step.

The Plan – Saving The Next $50,000

Just like enacting any plan that requires a change in habits or direct action, implementation of your plan to financial independence can be difficult. If you choose to save by cutting back on eating out, this will no doubt affect your social life. If you decide to work a side hustle, this will take time from other activities. To journey to financial independence, you will make sacrifices.

However, by the time you begin saving the next $50,000, you have already made changes and can now use the momentum that you have build up saving your first $50,000 and further optimize your strategy. Because of the habits formed saving your first $50,000, saving the next $50,000 will be easier to achieve.

Your Emergency Fund

By the time you are on the path to saving the next $50,000, based on your lifestyle, your emergency fund may now be fully funded or very close to being fully funded. This is a huge step and should provide comfort for you and your family. Saving 3 months, 6 months, or one year of expenses in your emergency fund is a huge step and you should feel very proud of yourself for achieving this milestone. Further, you should be motivated by the fact that you can do it. You can do this. The steps taken to financial independence is paying off.

You got this
You Got This!

Once you have achieved a fully funded emergency fund, do not stop saving. Continue the same habits. Do your homework, research and optimize your plan. Achieving financial independence takes time and consistency.

Once you have fund your emergency fund, instead of putting money into an emergency fund, you are now able to contribute that money to another area of your plan. Will you be contributing more to retirement, paying down debt if you still have debt, or invest?

Contributing To Retirement

Once you begin to save, you should attend to your retirement fund, especially if your employer is providing a match. No matter how little you may contribute, contribute to your retirement.

Now that you are saving the next $50,000, begin to increase your retirement contributions, especially if you have already paid down debt. In the year 2020, your contribution limits for a 401k is $19,500 (catch-up contribution limit for employees aged 50 and over is $6,500). The contribution limits for an IRA is $6,000 ($7,000 if you’re age 50 or older). As such, you are able to put away $25,500 ($33,000 if you are aged 50 or older).

On the path to financial independence, by consistently contributing to tax advantaged retirement accounts, it is possible to join the 401k millionaire club.

Paying Down Debt

Once you begin to save, you will  also need to attend to debts. You will definitely want to keep your accounts current by paying at least the minimum. Once your emergency fund is fully funded, it will be time to pay more than your minimum.

Remember, the best way to obtain a 16-18% return (the average interest charge on a credit card), is to pay off your credit card debt.

It is advisable to pay down debts having the highest interest rate. This will lower your interest payments as you pay down the debt. Another approach is to pay down the smallest debt first, such that you have a snow ball effect of paying the least balance to highest balance. The method used here is up to you. Which method will motivate you to pay down your debts faster?

Paying down debt in the early stages of your journey to financial independence typically provides the greatest early return. Paying down debt yields exponential benefits as it frees up funds for contributing to retirement and investment accounts such that you are able to take advantage of the power of compounding.

Ride The Wave – Saving The Next $50,000

As you are able to fund your emergency fund, pay off your debts, and contribute to your retirement, you will begin to have more funds available to further your race to financial independence. The funds that went to your emergency fund can be used to pay down debt, contribute to retirement fund, and/or invest.

Do not feel the need to “reward your self.” You do not want to fall into the trap of lifestyle creep/lifestyle inflation. You do not want to raise your standard to living as you earn more/have more disposable income. There are lots of folks who save the same amount when making $100,000 as they did when they were making $50,00. If you follow this path, this will be a detriment to your ultimate goal of financial independence.

As your income/disposable income increases, the amount you save/invest should be increase as well. Live below your means, and journey to financial independence.

Conclusion

On the journey to financial independence, each milestone is fuel for the next. One of the greatest initial milestone is that of accumulating funds over time. Once you have accumulated your first $50,000, it is time to think about saving the next $50,000 and beyond.  The biggest step on your journey to financial independence is the step you take today. Take the next step.

Time of your life

Time Of Your Life: Time Is Your Greatest Asset

Your time is your greatest asset, so use it wisely. As the old saying goes, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. So each second that you waste is a second that you will never get back, but also, you are a second closer to not being here. While this is a morbid outlook on life, it can be used to inspire your actions and financial decisions. Life your best life and have the time of your life.

Questions To Answer

Ask yourself:

  • How am I spending my time on this planet?
  • How am I managing my most valuable asset?
  • Am I maximizing my time?

Once you ask yourself these questions, do you feel a need to change:

  • Your actions?
  • How you spend your free time?
  • Your career?
  • How you interact with your family?

Ask yourself these questions now, such that you can make necessary changes, because you will not get back the time lost.

Maximizing Your Time – Have The Time Of Your Life

I was somewhat of a late bloomer when it came to maximizing my time. It took until college for me to realize how much time I had wasted.

To help pay for my college costs, I did work study. My first work study position was terrible. While simple, it demanded total concentration as it was in the administration office and included filing documents. The major issue here, I had to focus on tasks for a defined period of time, I would thereafter have classes, then I had to study for those classes. There had to be a more efficient way.

My mind was blown after discussing my work study position with a friend who was managing a computer lab. In college, managing a computer lab meant watching over a computer lab and helping students troubleshoot issues that may occur at the computer lab. This was a perfect college position because it allowed for maximization of time. Why?

As a computer lab manager, you were able to watch over the computer lab and perform your own personal studies. As this was college, rarely did any student need help on how to log on or how to use the Microsoft applications that were loaded thereon. If there was a powerpoint presentation, it was only a matter of setting up the equipment, simple!

Now, because students rarely asked questions, with this work study position, you are able to study for classes, review notes and do homework while getting paid. I was quickly able to transfer to this new position with the recommendation of my friend.

I loved the job, and I would work hours that others would not because I understood what I was gaining. By having this position, I was able to get paid to study and do homework. That is what I call maximizing your time.

What About You?

What about you? How can you maximize your time? How about learning a new language or subject matter while at the gym or running. To give some context. While many are listening to music on their headphones while working out, why not try to learn a new language or listen to an ebook? In your down time, why not get into a new hobby to expand your mind or physical abilities? What can you do to maximize your time on this planet?

Note that maximizing your time can bring many financial rewards. By expanding your mind and physical abilities you may become more qualified for position. You may become more well rounded. You may be able to accelerate your career progress and outlook. Such career advancement may lead to (1) a higher salary, (2) you starting a new business, (3) you spending more time with family, and (4) you achieving financial independence. By taking simple steps, you can have the time of your life while developing spiritually and professionally.

No Need To Maximize Everything

While I encourage you to maximize your time, not everything should be rushed. For example, time with your love ones.

Let us look at the F.I.R.E movement. Many have developed working and spending habits such that they can retire early (As I have noted previously, many in the F.I.R.E movement have no intention of retiring). By maximizing your time, you may be able to  advance your career, save more, and invest more. With these actions, you may be able to hit your F.I.R.E number and become financially independent. This may allow you to spend more time with your family and/or do tasks that you prefer.

Now, with more time with your family (if you like spending time with your family), when asked the below questions, you may think differently:

When asked:

  • How are you spending your time on this planet?
  • How are you managing your most valuable asset?
  • Are you maximizing your time?

The only change in your actions may be the thought that you should have done this sooner. Here, the journey to financial independence can be a journey to happiness.

Conclusion

Your time is your greatest asset, as such, you should use it wisely. As the old saying goes, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. So each second that you waste is a second that you will never get back, but also, you are a second closer to not being here. While this is a morbid outlook on life, it can be used to inspire your actions and financial decisions. Journey to financial independence. Life your best life and have the time of your life.

Covid-19

Financially Survive A Pandemic

As the Covid-19 pandemic expands, starting in the East and now devastating the West, governments are taking actions to limit and contain both the health and financial fallout. The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic are unimaginable. However, a pandemic should not change how you approach your financial future. These same principles apply during the coronavirus pandemic: live below your means, save and fund your emergency fund. By following these principles, you should be able to financially survive a pandemic.

Social Distancing

As countries and states practice social distancing, they are economically shutting down. As residences are forced to shelter in place, multiple parts of the economy shuts down. For example, the transportation industry (including airlines and taxies), the restaurant industry, and the hotel industry to name a few. As these industries shuts down, revenues are down while employees must be paid. In such a situation, unless there is some intervention, layoffs will follow.

Sorry we are closed

Layoff Concerns

In the current environment, the prospects of layoffs should be on every employee’s mind. For these employees, next are the thoughts of providing for their families, servicing mortgages, student loans and other debts. These thoughts breed anxiety and stress. More concerning, anxiety and stress lowers the ability of the immune system to fight diseases. This in turn leaves individuals more susceptible to diseases.

But not everyone is having financial anxiety.

Financial Independence

Over the past ten years, many have tried and have achieved financial independence. Many have exited the daily grind of working for others and have become their own bosses. For many, even with the current fall of the stock market, their financial future is stable no matter the out come of the pandemic and the related financial effects. These individuals are truly financially independent

How did these individuals achieve this peace of mind? They followed these basic money principles: live below your means, save and fund your emergency fund.   If you have followed and are following these principles, congratulations, during this economic crisis you will be ok at least in the short term. Simply put, by following these principles, you should be able to financially survive a pandemic.

You Can Achieve Peace Of Mind

Whether you own your own business or you are a salaried employee, there is a possibility of financial hardship in the future. As such, it is prudent that we all plan ahead for a rainy day. Living below your means, saving and funding your emergency fund takes planning. But also, taking these steps means sacrificing and delaying gratification.

By living below your means, you are able to limit debts, for example, lower mortgage payments and lower car payments. By not keeping up with the Jones, you are better able to weather the financial storm when it comes. Living below your means further frees up money for you to save and fund your emergency fund.

By saving and funding your emergency fund, you are able to have a greater runway to act during a financial crisis. In times of crisis, cash is king. By having a fully funded emergency fund of six to twelve months, any gaps in income can be made up at least temporarily. As such, you are able to maintain your standard of living while having time to search and potentially find a new job.

By planning ahead and putting away money, you are effectively buying time to maintain your family during retirement or a financial crisis. If you are not practicing these basic principles discussed, begin today. Saving $100 a month is $1,200 in a year, and $12,000 in ten years without added interest. If this amount is invested, your total following 10 years will likely be higher.

The Future

As the number of those infected by the coronavirus increases, pay particular attention to the programs available to financially help individuals and businesses. Federal student loan payments are being delayed for 60 days, while foreclosures, evictions and mortgage are being temporarily suspended. As these programs are outlined and implemented, plan ahead and take the steps necessary to keep your family secure and financially healthy.

Conclusion

As the Covid-19 pandemic expands, starting in the East and now devastating the West, governments are taking actions to limit and contain both the health and financial fallout. The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic are unimaginable. However, a pandemic should not change how you approach your financial future. These same principle apply during the coronavirus pandemic: live below your means, save and fund your emergency fund. By following these principles, you should be able to financially survive a pandemic.

Fear of money

Fear Of Money

Money is a difficult topic to talk about. Not because money is inherently bad, but because money is an instant mark by which we compare ourselves to others. To the few, money is viewed as a tool to get what they desire. To the masses, money is a scarce resource that must be guarded. Most have a fear of money, consciously or unconsciously.

The Have And The Have Nots

When addressing money, there are major differences between the wealthy and those without wealth. The wealthy sees money as a tool that is to be used. The more money they have access to, the more they can bend the world to their desires.

Consequences Of Having A Fear Of Money

While the wealthy view money as a tool, those without wealth fear money. Yes, they fear money. Many believe in the concept of “more money more problem.” Further, the masses have an unhealthy fear of not having money.

More Money More Problems

Why is there a belief in “more money more problems.” Have you ever heard the statement: “money is the root of all evil.” Now, think about who you have heard this from. Was the statement made by someone with wealth or from someone without wealth or new to wealth? I can guarantee that you have not heard the above statement from a wealthy individual.

Let’s dig in. Note that 1 Timothy 6:10 actually reads, “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”  Even without historical context, it is clear that the bible is not saying that money is the root of all evil. Instead, it is saying that a love of money and not money it self, is the root of  all kinds of evil. This one misquoted phrase and other similar phrases have consciously and unconsciously ruined our relationship with money.

With this miss quoted text, many view money as not being good and subconsciously very bad. How can you make and grow your money when you believe that money is the root of all evil?

Change your relationship with money. Money is a tool that can be used, in some cases for good and in other cases for evil. As such, remove the above and similar phrases from your vocabulary and build wealth.

The Fear Of Not Having Money

While a healthy fear of not having money is a good motivator, an unhealthy fear of not having money is a problem. Why is this a problem? The fear of not having money can lead to a scarcity mindset. The belief that money is a limited resource, it is not.

Further, acting out of an unhealthy fear of not having money can lead to not allowing yourself to take risk to grow yourself or your business. An unhealthy fear of not having money can lead to lack of confidence and not standing up for yourself personally and/or professionally.

In this regard, the fear of not having money leads to an employee mindset. A mindset of working for someone else for a secure salary and not rocking the boat. This mindset is a danger to financial independence.

Let’s dig into the above statement with regard to the security of a salary position. A salary position is not a secure income source. With a salary position, you are giving your boss complete control over your financial life. The classical, putting all your eggs in one basket. Further, most employees are at-will employees and as such your company can fire you for any reason. Does that sound secure to you?

Embrace money and use money as a tool. Instead of  having one salary position, invest in yourself and secure multiple income streams. Stop fearing not having money and take back control of your financial life from your boss.

Conclusion

Money is a difficult topic to talk about. Not because money is inherently bad, but because money is an instant mark by which we compare ourselves to others. To the few, money is viewed as a tool to get what they desire. To the masses, money is a scarce resource that must be guarded. Most have a conscious or unconscious fear of money. Get over the fear of money, have confidence in yourself and take calculated risk and journey to financial independence.

How To Stay Motivated

With anything in life worth having, there tends to be some pain associated, physical or physiological. The journey to financial independence is no different. While many hope to be financially independent, few take the steps necessary to be financially independent and fewer still are able to achieve financial independence. If you are serious about achieving financial independence and have taken steps to begin the journey, stay on the path. But how to stay motivated?

The Wish

We all would like to max out our retirement accounts, save and pay off debts. However, are you willing to make the required scarifies? For many, the answer is no. Just as many have started diets and have not attain weight lost, many have started to save, pay off debts and save for retirement but never attain their goals.

Many will save for a week, a month or a few months, but few are able to consistently save the same or more for a period of years. To find the motivation to deprive yourself of certain activities or joy is difficult. Delayed gratification is not fun for most and downright painful for others. When we begin the process of attaining a long term goal (financial independence), we are naturally working against ourselves. We are built for instant gratification

Turning The Wish Into A Goal, How To Stay Motivated

To achieve your goals, you must engineer an environment where you are more likely to succeed. The below represents only a few steps that can be taken to build this environment.

A goal without a plan is a wish

Short Term, Intermediate And Long Term Goals

We are more likely to succeed on our journey to financial independence if we have a long term goal (financial independence), intermediate goals, but also short term goals.

The short term, intermediate and long term goals allow for short term, intermediate and long term rewards. This offsets and/or lessens the pain of delayed gratification. Thus increasing the chances of you staying on course and attaining your goals.

Visualize Each Goal In Detail

Visualize each short term, intermediate and long term goal. Have a plan with details. By visualizing your goals you are able to focus. Further, attaining each detail or checking off a detail in the plan is a mini reward. This mini reward offsets and/or lessens the pain of delayed gratification. As someone previously stated, “A goal without a plan is a wish.” We have a lot of dreamers/wishers out there, don’t be one.

Be Flexible

“There is more than one way to skin a cat.” Meaning, there are many ways to achieve a goal. Even with detailed plans, life happens, things change. Bend with the winds of life while keeping your goals in focus.

Continuously Check Your Progress

Hold yourself accountable by continuously checking your progress. Consider creating a spreadsheet or an equivalent to track your progress.

Surround Yourself With Like-Minded People

The fact is, the people you surround yourself with has a direct influence on how you behave. “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” Be around those who will encourage you to achieve your goals. If your goals are viewed negatively by those around you, it is highly unlikely that you will achieve your goals. This also ties in nicely with not being the smartest person in the room. Surround yourself with those you can learn from.

Reward Yourself

It is only human nature to avoid pain and move toward instant gratification. As such, it is important to consciously realize our default actions and change our mindset and actions. Small rewards will enhance your chances of attaining your goals. Let’s face it, every now and then, we need a moment to enjoy the fruits of our labor, no matter how small. Understand who you are and take the necessary steps to work with your innate impulses to attain your goals.

Make It Fun

Enjoy the journey and the destination if you can.

Conclusion

While many hope to be financially independent, few take the steps necessary to be financially independent and fewer still are able to achieve financial independence. If you are serious about achieving financial independence and have taken steps to begin the journey, stay on the path. But how to stay motivated? Engineer an environment where you are more likely to succeed.
